We used plastic and rubber gloves for Vapor Barrier protection of hands for many years.  They were effective but plastic is uncomfortable.  Moisturizing hand lotions also help but don’t give near the potential extra warmth, and don’t keep gloves dry, a main objective of Vapor Barrier gloves.

Vapor Barrier glove liners made from Fuzzy Stuff solve those problems and provide all benefits of Vapor Barrier with the comfort of a soft knit glove and much longer life than any other Vapor Barrier glove liners. Sizing is the only problem since hands vary so much and there are no real standards.

For glove sizing, send your hand tracing and measurement around the widest part of palm. We’ll send our best guess for best fit, and will quickly exchange for another size if too small or large.

Use Vapor Barrier gloves for your first layer, then knit gloves over the Vapor Barrier, finish with thick mitts or thick gloves depending on temperature. When you need finger dexterity you can remove mitts and still have some protection.

The Vapor Barrier liner blocks the skin from wind chill, reduces loss of humidity, and thus reduces evaporative cooling at your skin. This is particularly important in extreme cold climates and conditions. In those conditions breathability and wickability can actually be deadly, you need to keep moisture from being absorbed by your insulating layers. These gloves keep the sweat and moisture loss at your hands from getting to your insulating layers, they also work as a wind breaker to keep wind chill off your hands. As heat is lost through your hands and also prevents against frostbite.

About Vapor Barrier

  • The Warmlite® vapor barrier clothing and sleeping bag liner protects an individual from dehydration, mineral loss, and overheating, while also protecting clothes from being soaked by sweat. Sweat is contained within the vapor barrier layer and does not readily evaporate, nor can it reach clothing, making clothing cold, wet and putting one at risk of hypothermia.
  • Vapor Barrier items can add up to 15° Fahrenheit of warmth when snugly sealed at all openings. Slight ventilation will eliminate most of the warmth retention, but will not stop the excess sweat prevention.
  • Conserving body moisture is especially important in winter. If you begin to sweat heavily in the vapor barrier clothing, simply remove outer clothing until you feel comfortable.
  • With vapor battier clothing it is best to adjust the number and weight of outer layers before engaging in increased activity, such as climbing or leaving camp to go for a hike. This is to prevent excess heat and sweat.
  • The lining of Warmlite® sleeping bags is made of fuzzy stuff, it is a blend of vapor barrier material and a warm, wicking, fabric that wicks sweat away from the body keeping it dry and warm while sleeping. That’s why the surface wicking of Warmlite Fuzzy Stuff is so important for comfort.
  • Hand wash all vapor barrier items such as shirts, pants, socks, and gloves. Another way to rinse vapor barrier items is to put the item on inside out and run the shower over it.
